Disney had a hard time finding its standing in the early 2000s. A small background...Treasure Planet was a devotion project from the start. Due to the rumored existence of a Star Trek spinoff with a Treasure Island position, Disney CEO Michael Eisner decided against the Treasure Island in Space concept. The Little Mermaid was born, and it marked the start of a stellar ten ages of box office success for Disney. He even said no to Mermaid because of Splash, but workshop commander Jeffrey Katzenberg called Clemens up the next day and told him to broaden that angle a little more.
